Mt Hutt walk – an afternoon out

Sometimes combining two hobbies is the best way to make the time to get out and about with the camera. My husband and I are planning an anniversary hike of the Milford Track in April so it was time to get into the hills again and test my fitness.

Well the steepness of the trek certainly did that!!  Once again though the camera had to come, why people ask would you tramp with an DSLR. Why I ask would you no. I know phones are pretty impressive now with photo taking, and certainly do the trick for some nice memories, but if you want to play in Adobe Lightroom, or the like, then I am prepared to lug the extra weigh to get the RAW shots I want and to ultimately the quality to play with.  Carrying a DSLR on a trek for me just means a bit of planning, which lens do you need, are you likely to need any filters and is the tripod a nice to have or necessity. If there is not water or a sun set on a sunny day I will probably leave it behind.

The other trick is to have an easy way to carry it either on your pack or a in a simple access sling as if its buried in your pack you will probably find it hardly ever comes out or your tramping buddies soon tired of you “mucking around”!

What about you?
What do you think about lugging a SLR up a hill?
